⭐⭐⭐

Victoria and Stoker unexpectedly find themselves stuck at home after their planned expedition had to be canceled. Veronica is persuaded by the mysterious Lady Sunbridge to take on a case to prove the innocence of her friend, Miles Ramsforth. Miles is accused of murdering his mistress, Artimesia, and is awaiting his execution.

As expected, their investigations lead them down various interesting paths and unexpected conclusions. The pair is severely hampered in their efforts, since they have to keep certain information to themselves, and the police are of no help at all.

As with the first book, I enjoyed the writing style a lot, but things did move a bit slow at times. I enjoyed finding out more about Stoker and seeing the two of them grow closer. I liked Veronica a lot more this time around. She is still the same outspoken, devil-may-care woman we’ve come to know. I guess I’m more used to her now and I know what to expect from her.

I will definitely continue reading the series.

Was I hooked by this book? Yes.
