⭐⭐⭐
Ben and Rachel were best friends at university, and pretty inseparable. But Rachel had a boyfriend (not in the same town), and so they were nothing more than friends, ever. Fast forward a decade or so, and they run into each other again, but this time Ben is married, and Rachel had just ended her 13-year long relationship with Rhys.
I really enjoyed the writing style of this book. I loved the witty banter and dialogue, and the characters. Rachel’s friends are pretty awesome. I liked Ben, and even Rhys and Simon, despite their jerk-ness.
I was not so enamoured with the plot. The bulk of Rachel and Ben’s feelings are based on a friendship they had in university, many years ago. It was pretty obvious that Ben was in love with Rachel, but she only had eyes for Rhys. And then they shared one night together before a big misunderstanding drove them apart, until we come to the present day. In all of that time they had zero contact with each other. Now, they meet, and it’s obvious they are interested in each other, which makes sense, given their history. But Ben is married. So, they pick up their friendship again, with his wife by his side. The entire book is then all their interactions with these limitations on any kind of progress they might wish to make in their relationship. And then, of course, they get together.
And I’m not sure how I feel about that. But, I enjoyed the book enough that I could look beyond my personal opinions.
Was I hooked by this book? Yes.
