This is book one in the series STAT: Special Threat Assessment Team.
This is a spin-off series from the very popular Dallas SWAT werewolves series. My review for the last book in that series can be found here.
Here we meet the newly formed Special Threat Assessment Team (STAT), bravely headed by Jake Huang. Jake has recently moved to DC to start a new life and a new job with the twin beta werewolves that he has taken responsibility for. The STAT team is a mixture of werewolves and humans, and nobody really knows each other. Jes is one of the humans of the new STAT team. She is distrustful of the three werewolves that are now part of the team. They all have to get over their individual reservations real quick, when they are sent on a mission to London to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl.
We are introduced to a new species of non-human, who are also the bad guys, but for most of the book we have no idea who they are or what their motivations are. The team learns through trial and error what works and what doesn’t when it comes to taking down the bad guys. This was interesting and things do fall into place very neatly.
I liked Jake and Jes, and their romance was okay. I liked them together, but there wasn’t enough spark. Since all the characters in the team are new, there was a lot of time spent introducing them. Each of them is unique and makes a valuable contribution. Caleb especially was an interesting character.
The action scenes played out well, and the team definitely learned how to work together.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC to review. Any thoughts and opinions are my own.
Was I hooked by this book? Yes, I like the world and the characters.
