4 Stars from me.
Detective Kara Quinn is on reluctant leave from the LAPD and she is spending her two weeks off with her grandmother in Liberty Lake. She isn’t very happy to be away from work, and when she finds the body of a murdered nurse by the lake, she can’t help but be drawn into the investigation.
FBI special agent Matt Costa is in charge of the brand-new Mobile Response Team. The team is shaping up, but still not fully staffed, and it’s all hands on deck when they arrive in Liberty Lake to try to catch the serial killer responsible for the nurse’s death. Luckily for them the local law enforcement is more than happy to help them.
I didn’t like Kara initially. She is very hard. But she is an undercover detective, so I presume that means she is fairly jaded and has seen most of what the worst of humanity is capable of. She did grow on me, and I liked her meticulous attention to detail. She was a major asset to Matt’s team. Matt just wanted to get the job done and catch the killer in time. But he was thrown into other roles as well, and he managed to make it all work.
The story started big and fast and kept going in the same vein. The killer’s identity and motivations were revealed bit by bit in a very interesting and engaging manner. The action is fast-paced and never boring, and very well written.
I can’t wait to see what Kara and Matt are up to next.
Was I hooked by this book? Oh, yes.
