⭐⭐⭐⭐ Was I hooked by that book? Actually, yes. There are some parts that had me confused, but the writing is engaging, and I was hooked right until the end.

BLURB

Micah the Unwilling, fae King of the Forgotten, is nearing the end of his truce with Kaysar and Cookie. He is determined to get his kingdom back. His people are wary of him, because he is a chimera, with two opposing powers. The only kinship Micah had ever found was with a girl he had stumbled upon when he himself was a young boy.

Viori is mired in guilt after inadvertently causing the death of her parents. Her brother, Kaysar, hid her in the woods and disappeared, leaving her to her own devices. She has had to forge her own path, giving her terrifying power free reign in the process. She happens upon Micah’s camp by accident. Micah is unwilling to let her go again and Viori sees this as an opportunity to redeem herself with Kaysar.

MY THOUGTHS

This is a dark and convoluted world that doesn’t always make sense. But at the crux of it you have a group of fae with immense powers duking it out for one kingdom. Trust is an incredibly scarce commodity, hard won, and grudgingly given.

I like Micah most of all. He is consistent in his actions and is driven by his need to provide for his people. In contrast, Viori is all over the place. Apart from her desire to rectify things with Kaysar, her motivations were mostly self-centered. She also doesn’t seem to have any remorse for the damage her creations had caused. I have mixed feelings about her. Towards the end she did recognize that her actions have consequences and she started to think more about Micah’s wellbeing. When it comes to secondary characters, my favorite is still Amber, Kaysar’s oracle.

Some of the fighting scenes were a bit over the top, too many bits to keep track of. But the author kept the plot moving along and kept my attention.

This is book 2 in the Immortal Enemies series. I liked Ruthless a bit more than Heartless. This series will work for you if you like dark fantasy, with slightly unhinged characters.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
