⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Was I hooked by that book? Absolutely. Treachery abounds in this thrilling hunt for a master villain that keeps slipping through the cracks.

Charlotte Locke is on a mission to capture her nemesis. Henrika claims to have answers about Charlotte’s father’s death on a Section 47 mission years ago, and she has also created a horrific new weapon capable of killing even the strongest paramortals, which makes her the number one target. Desmond Percy, a powerful galvanist, is Charlotte’s partner both inside and outside Section 47. Desmond is determined to help Charlotte get the answers she is so desperately seeking, as well as taking revenge on Henrika for killing his best friend. But the deeper Charlotte and Desmond dig into Henrika and her murky motives, the more dangerous the mission becomes. Henrika is playing her own spy game, and Charlotte and Desmond are just the pawns she is using to achieve her own evil ends—caught up in a deadly legacy of treachery.

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely love Charlotte and Desmond. They are one of my favourite book couples ever. Individually, they are smart and dedicated, and they use their abilities effectively and efficiently. It is a pleasure to see them in their natural element. Together, they are pure magic.

Henrika felt a bit like a cartoon villain at times, twirling her metaphorical mustache, which contributed to the fun in this story. But she was undeniably diabolical, and a formidable and unpredictable opponent. This book revealed more details about her, making her more complex and I (gasp) think I actually liked her (just a little bit).

The spectacular ending came about with a few major unexpected twists. I had my heart in my throat pretty much the entire time. There were also a few bonus epilogues that added to the sweet satisfaction of a job well done and the vague hints of future intrigue. I cannot wait for the next adventure.

I can highly recommend this series if you like spy thrillers with spicy romance in an urban fantasy setting. It is best to read the books in order, as they establish the characters and the world building.
