Quickie Reviews are what it says, a short one paragraph review for those books that didn’t get a full page review.

The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros on Hooked By That Book

The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros

Georgia Stanton is back home, licking her wounds, when she gets an unexpected and uninvited request from an author to complete her great-grandmother’s unfinished manuscript. Georgia is reluctant because this is the story of Scarlet Stanton’s great love and it’s very personal to Georgia. She gives in and allows Noah Harrison to write it, expecting him to end it the way all his books end, in tragedy. But life and the past have very different endings in mind.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ There was so much sadness, desperation, determination, hope, and love packed into the pages of this book. We have two poignant love stories that happen decades apart, not to mention the incredibly close bond between Scarlet and her sister. While I adored Scarlet and Jamieson’s story, I would’ve liked to see more of Noah and Georgia. But I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of Scarlet and Constance’s job. The ending blew me away. I cried big tears from about halfway and the words were somewhat blurry by the end.

Archangel's Lineage by Nalini Singh on Hooked By That Book

Archangel’s Lineage by Nalini Singh

An Ancestor, an angel unlike any other, stirs from his Sleep to warn the Cadre of a darkness so terrible that it causes empires to fall and civilizations to vanish. This time, even the Cadre itself may not be able to stop a ticking clock that is counting down at frightening speed.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I loved Marduk, his history, and his connection to Raphael and Elena. It was good seeing the Cadre work together for a change and to have hope for a time of peace. This book did feel like an ending with plenty of things getting resolved and wrapped up nicely. This is an amazing series, filled with love, hope, and courage. It is definitely best to read the books in order. Don’t start with this one.

If You Want Me by Helena Hunting on Hooked By That Book

If You Want Me by Helena Hunting

There’s no one more off limits than my best friend’s daughter. Peggy Aurora Hammerstein. The Toronto Terror’s unofficial team princess. I would never do anything to mess with our team dynamics this late into the hockey season, but seeing her work in the front office changed something for me. Her little flirts and taunts push my buttons, if she doesn’t stop my control just might break. But I can never cross that line. I can never know what it could be to call her mine. I’ve never wanted anyone more than Aurora and no one can ever know.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ The age gap here didn’t bother me at all, except for the age differences between Aurora, Hollis, and Roman that threw me for a loop all through the book. I guess it’s mostly because Roman is her father, so it was difficult imagining him as someone who is Hollis’s peer professionally. I loved the chemistry between Hollis and Aurora and their very intense flirting, but I didn’t appreciate Hollis blowing hot and cold all the time. And I so wanted them to come clean to Roman, because I really liked him and think that he would’ve been very reasonable about it.

A Ruse of Shadows by Sherry Thomas on Hooked By That Book

A Ruse of Shadows by Sherry Thomas

Charlotte Holmes is accustomed to solving crimes, not being accused of them, but she finds herself in a dreadfully precarious position.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ As I read this, I went through various stages of confusion, wondering if I was maybe missing some crucial information. Then something would click and slowly and very carefully everything is revealed with Charlotte’s characteristic nonchalance. I absolutely love Charlotte and Ash together and he is still one of my favourites.
